Millard Sheets, “Alfred,” c. 1961

Millard Sheets, “Alfred,” c. 1961. 140 in x 48 in x 48 in. Gift of Tony Sheets, Brian Worley, and the Los Angeles Scottish Rite Bodies.

This mosaic by Millard Sheets is a fragment of a larger mural originally installed on the interior (theater) of the former Scottish Rites Masonic Temple in Los Angeles (located at 4357 Wilshire Blvd – now the Maurice and Paul Marciano Art Foundation). The building and the associated mural were completed in 1961.

The mosaic, depicting Alfred the Great, was conserved in 2016 by Brian Worley, former mosaicist at Millard Sheets & associates (1967-1980). The fragment was acquired by AMOCA in 2017, and Worley directed installation of the mosaic in AMOCA’s lobby (May, 2018).
